Save your Social Media
It’s so easy to take a funny story straight to Facebook or tweet your most recent brilliant thought, but we’re often stealing blog content from ourselves by going straight to social media. The next time you have a quip to share, stop.
Ask yourself, “Is this a story for a blog post?” You’d be surprised how often the answer is yes.
I am never without pen and paper. I’ve learned that my thoughts need to be written down or they’ll be lost forever.
- Carry a journal.
- Keep Post-It notes nearby.
- Use an app like Evernote (or download the PC version).
- Use your calendar to inspire ideas.
- Take lots of picture “notes” with your phone.
We all have posts from our early blogging days that never got the attention they deserved. You might have some quality stuff hiding in your archives. Go look! Find a post that’s still relevant and dust it off. Spruce it up with a shiny new image and recycle that bad boy!
Then and Now
Recycling posts can easily turn into a “then and now” style post. Perhaps your readers would love to hear an update on a topic you used to blog about, but haven’t in a while? Take an old post, add a fresh perspective and you’re good to go! This is great for family updates or a change of opinion. A new look at an old topic can spark all sorts of writing ideas.
Create a Back-Up Batch
A back-up batch is what I call posts that are relevant and fresh, but didn’t take a lot of brain power to write. You should have at least five of these posts set aside for a rainy day.
What makes a good back-up post?
- list-style posts
- posts with more images and less writing
I try to save these types of posts to fill in the gaps between those that require a lot from me personally or emotionally. I tend to write from the heart, and that can be draining if I attempt to do it every day. Not every post can come from that deep down writer-y spot and that’s OK! When you’re feeling like your writing isn’t up to par or you’re struggling to find the right words, grab from the back-up batch.
Happy blogging, friends!
