Google rolls out Android 12 beta 3 with scrolling screenshots, on-device search and more – Times of India

0

NEW DELHI: Tech giant Google released the first beta of Android 12 at its annual developer conference I/O 2021 in May this year. Then, last month the company released beta 2 for Android 12 with new privacy features. Now, Google has rolled out the third beta of the latest version of its Android operating system.
The beta 3 for Android 12 brings multiple improvements over Android 12 beta 2. The latest beta update also brings features like scrolling screenshots, on-device search and more.
The tech giant also released the Android 12 beta 3 for TV with Refresh Rate Switching Settings, 4K UI support and more.

Scrolling screenshots
This Android 12 feature is already available in many Android versions such as Oppo’s ColorOS and Samsung‘s One UI. With this feature in place, users will be able to capture and share scrolling content more easily. When users capture a screenshot of content that’s scrollable, they’ll now see a “Capture more” button to extend the screenshot to the full content and they can then adjust the crop.
On-device search
Google introduced a new AppSearch API, which is a new high-performance on-device search engine. With AppSearch, apps can index structured data and search over it with built-in full-text search capabilities. AppSearch will offer two settings — a local index for the app and a central index. The settings will integrate the app data in Android 12’s System UI and will then natively offer features like multi-language support, relevancy ranking and more.
Better, faster auto-rotate
With Android 12 beta 3, the Pixel smartphones will use the front camera for the auto-rotate feature. With the help of face detection, the front camera will analyse the angle and will rotate the screen accordingly. The enhanced auto-rotate feature lives within our recently announced Private Compute Core, so images are never stored or sent off the device.
Along with this, with Android 12 the company has also improved the speed of auto-rotation. The latency for the base auto-rotate feature has been reduced by 25%, and the benefits of the face detection enhancement build on top of those improvements.

Android 12 for Games
Android 12 beta 3 comes with new Game Mode APIs that enable developers to customise the performance of their game according to the profile set by users. These APIs will be tied to the upcoming game dashboard which provides an overlay experience with quick access to key utilities during gameplay. The game dashboard will be available on select devices later this year.
Privacy indicator APIs in WindowInsets
One of the key highlights of Android 12 is its privacy features. One such privacy feature is the new notification received when an app uses the device’s camera or microphone. The company said that the developers may have a problem with this feature if these notifications will cover useful content in their app. In order to solve this issue, Google has introduced a Privacy indicator API in WindowInsets. This will enable the developers to customise the relative placement of the notification on the screen.
Presently, Android 12 Beta 2 is available for Google Pixel smartphones. Users can download the update manually from the Android developer website. The company has already announced that Beta 3 will be released in July followed by Beta 4 in August.

Why Facebook advertisers are ‘panicking’ over this iPhone feature – Times of India

0

Facebook hasn’t been really happy with Apple ever since the iPhone maker spoke about the App Tracking Transparency feature back in June 2020 at its annual developer conference.
It’s been almost three months since Apple rolled out the feature, which gives users the choice to be tracked by advertisers online across apps, with iOS 14.5 and it has been enough time for iPhone users to opt for it.
According to a report by Bloomberg, data from analytics firm Branch has revealed that only 25% of users are opting in to be tracked, leading to an undercurrent of panic in the advertising industry.
The Mark Zuckerberg-led social media giant declined to respond to Bloomberg’s report, data from Branch claims that approximately 75% of iPhone users are now running iOS 14.5 or later with App Tracking transparency. Out of this, only 25% of users have tapped on “Allow” when they see the prompt.
The Bloomberg report cites multiple advertisers who are facing the effects of this.
“What Facebook was great at is they were able to see who bought and find that user’s buyer behaviour – what other websites are they visiting, what other things are they doing,” Zach Stuckmedia buyer who runs Homestead Studio and spends millions on Facebook ads per month said. “When it can’t see this data, Facebook can’t accurately find “other people that might be able to buy a product similar to that.”
“There’s no source of truth at all anymore. Every platform gives you different numbers,” said Dave Herrmann, who runs his own agency called Herrmann Digital and manages more than $2.5 million in monthly Facebook advertising spend.
Back in May, Facebook was spotted adding a new notice — which it calls educational screens — within its Facebook and Instagram iOS apps in a bid to urge its users not to opt for it.
Why does Facebook have a problem with App Tracking Transparency?
Facebook uses IDFA or better known as Identifiers for Advertisers. As the name suggests, it’s a tool to track you and your phone across apps, services and websites. IDFA uses random identifiers to deliver customised advertising.
Facebook relies on this data as it is a part of their business model and comes as no surprise why they are against it. To be fair to Facebook, its biggest argument is that IDFA helps it know how ad campaigns have done. Many small developers rely on these ads as a source of income and the ATT feature hurts them.
